Love a good pub but can't be doing with mediocre beer, the beer would have to be a little better than OK.
I am quite happy in a modern bar drinking great beer. Of course great pubs with great beer are the ideal scenario.

The intention of "uncongenial" was not to mean a modern bar, but a pub or bar with some aspect that you really don't like. For example, for me, a pub with nothing but posing tables, and with screaming children running around.

Ah like Wetherspoons, in that case my vote has changed.

Like the first commenter, I dithered because of the definition of "great".
But decided to interpret it as "great for me, all things considered" and voted for "great pub".

I haven't voted because you haven't defined what is meant by "great beer", "great pub", "OK beer" and "uncongenial". Is a great pub with OK beer one that is popular with locals although only serving a fairly ordinary Doom Bar? Or a heritage pub superbly preserved but with mediocre London Pride? Is an uncongenial pub apparently so because it is full of pretentious hipsters being boring about keg craft, though the cask beer on offer is superbly kept? On balance, I prefer I pub where I feel welcome and where there is something I would like to drink. Neither the pub nor the beer has to be great (depending how you define "great", of course).

It's only intended to be a fun poll - I can't analyse it to the nth degree.
