Part of the joy of Minecraft was that first time you saw the moon rise, and the fact it was evidently square. I don't think Minecraft should make any move towards being smooth (apart from the lighting of course! :D). It has a unique appeal by avoiding current triple A conventions to antialias everything to the point pixels vanish altogether. Notch, please avoid round celestial bodies, but rather please just do as you're doing!
