Quite simply, The game is developing. A square sun is fine to start with, but in a finished product? It's still made of squares. Your house you have in Minecraft? I doubt tahts a dead square. It's probably got a roof that 'slopes'. Just like our beautiful new sun.
Square lovers need to realise that this is a game being developed, so of course changes are going to occur. It's not like you notice the sun/moon very much now, is it? Tesla could of had us traveling the universe, hell, maybe someone before that also. But people don't like change all at once, it needs to happen very slowly. Round Moon/w phase gets my vote. I suppose that was taking it a bit too far, but too many people seem to be going through their 'Minecraft midlife crisis.' "whaaaaa.. I miss the good ol' days of Minecraft, when there was no content."
