Agree, should be an option in video or game settings  It's a square world. The sun and moon should be square too. If round round blocks become the norm then the shape of the moon and sun should be reconsidered. .. Let him do what he wants with the game, its his game not yours.
It should be Square, thats what Minecraft is about... If you want it round or 'phase-changing' then simply use a texture pack.
