Because it's always been square! Those used to it being round are already using texture packs!

I'd say squares because literally everything is made from squares. The only thing that wouldn't be square is the sun and moon, which makes no sense.

It's made up of many blocks, it's not actually round. :3

you are so wrong, nothing in the game is made of squares. minecraft is made of blocks and the moon is made of a bunch of blocks, its not one giant one, and which gives it rounded edges. not a circle but rounded, its still blocky so it stays true to minecraft. and mountains and hills are made of blocks with make them sloped/rounded. there for you make no sense with the comment you just posted.

Slime balls, ender eyes and pearls, clay are all round and many other things aren't square.

Those are items, what world element is round?

the moon and sun is a sprite like the items are so it would make perfect sense since other sprites are round why shouldnt the moon/sun and mountain and hills are world elements that are sloped/round.

It is still made of blocks. Just in a way that resembles a circle instead of a square.

i can't believe i'm saying this again... the world is NOT SQUARE... its BLOCKY... and so are the new sun/moon!!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M SAYING THIS AGAIN! WE DON'T WANT A BLOCKY CIRCULAR MOON, WE WANT A BLOCKY SQUARE MOON (and sun)

when i fist learned a bout minecraft and i heard about the moon and the sun being square it made me smile but now that it might be changed it makes me sad i want it to stay square so others can find the humor in it

Exactly! It's trading a little bit of looks for a lot of charm.

yeah im sure when you first heard about minecraft you were told of the square moon and not creepers considering creepers are iconic to minecraft not a square moon/sun.
