Is there some particular reason to assume phases are not going to be based on sprites and therefore also modifiable with texture packs?

We already have an "option" - it's called texture packs! Minecraft is square, keep the sun and moon square

minecraft is not square. its cubes and a bunch of cubes can make rounded edges.
